Welcome back food lovers and let me share with you about a lovely Ramen place called MenBow in Victoria, BC.
Address: 1018 Blanshard Street, Victoria, BC, Canada
Hours: 11:30 am – 8:45 pm daily (unless otherwise noted)
Prices: Average price is around $15 CAD for a bowl of Ramen.
I grab my friends Robby and Gary to accompany me for lunch at the Ramen Shop. The menu at MenBow was designed in a way so you can customize the Broth Type and Richness of your ramen like for example you can have a Medium richness pork broth. My personal preference is getting a Heavy Richness Pork broth with all my ramen orders. The menu at MenBow has a variety of appetizers such as chicken karrage (fried chicken), beef short ribs, and of course classic ɡyōzə.
On the Ramen side, they have multiple bowls of ramen to choose from at the time such as Shio (Salt), Shoyu (Soya), Miso, Spicy Miso, and Tomato (Vegetarian and comes with tofu). The first time I was here I ordered the Spicy Miso Ramen in a Heavy Richness Pork broth with extra pork slices. Meanwhile, my friend Gary and Robby got a Medium richness pork broth Shoyu Ramen with Extra noodles as they love noodles. Depending on the time of day the food can be served anywhere from five minutes up to 20 minutes in the worst-case scenario.
Afterwards, our food has arrived in my ramen bowl I got a rich broth with yummy noodles and the following toppings:
Spicy shredded peppers
Green onions
Sprouts
Corn
Spinach
Narutomaki (Surimi)
Nori (seaweed)
Chashu pork
Half a soft boiled egg.
Robby and Gary’s Shoyu bowl also has a rich broth with the extra yummy noodles and the following toppings:
Green onions
Spinach
Fermented bamboo
Pickled mushrooms
Sprouts
Narutomaki
Nori
Chashu pork
half a soft boiled egg
Now it time for us to feast on our Ramen delight, as I take a sip of the broth in my Spicy Miso I suddenly feel a positive rush to my head as my eyes widen in amazement at how rich the broth is. The taste was amazing and I know that the balance of the spice with the broth made it delicious. I then start tasting the other toppings like the Chashu Pork which had a balance of fat and meat that was soft to chew on. The shredded red peppers give an explosive boost to the soup when it submerged and at the same time soaks into the toppings that are submerged too. The sprouts and spinach have a crunch, while the nori it depends if you eat it quickly enough.
Rob and Gary impression of the Ramen is that it was very filling and they like how the bamboo and mushrooms balance our the taste of the Ramen and they are so satisfied that at one point they ate at MenBow for a week straight eating the same thing over and over.
Overall it was a good Ramen place as it the closest you can find to being an authentic Japanese Ramen like in Japan while in Victoria. My advice to people ordering ramen is that you should wear a napkin around your neck as I noticed that my squad had splashes of the ramen broth on their shirts after eating. I suspect when we slurp down the noodles that it swings around and hit the broth on us.
Cheers,
AV
